Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm

One of the world’s greats

Less than an hour’s drive from Derby are two of Tasmania’s best golf courses, in fact they are equal to the best you’ll play anywhere in the world. Barnbougle Dunes and sister course Lost Farm are nestled on the shore of Anderson Bay. Suitable for all standards of player the courses have wide fairways to accommodate the variety of winds which can sweep the course.

The Dunes was opened for play in 2004 on land which was once a potato farm! The layout was designed to complement the landscape and lays claim to being the number 1 public access golf course in Australia. Following the success of The Dunes a second course was proposed and subsequently built literally just across the river, Lost Farm opened in 2010 and is nestled amongst steeper and more dramatic dunes. Lost Farm has 20 holes, 13a initially built as a substitute hole has since been determined to be too good to leave out, there is also an 18a short 3 par straight to the bar and clubhouse, you get all 20 holes included in your green fee.

The story of how Barnbougle Dunes was founded has been oft told. In a nutshell, Mike Keiser saw the opportunity for a Bandon Dunes-style resort to be created on this incredible dune land on the northern coast of Tasmania. After some persuasion, the farmer who owned the land engaged Tom Doak and Mike Clayton to create a links course on this sandy base and Barnbougle Dunes emerged.

They have created something pretty remarkable. I have played most of the great links courses in the United Kingdom and Barnbougle Dunes would hold its own with virtually any of them, and surpass most. It is a phenomenal achievement and one that golfers from around the world should flock to.

Both The Dunes and Lost Farm have Course Tour videos on their websites which allow you to check out each hole before you go. Spectacular drone footage will have you salivating and plotting your lines before you go.

Reservations are suggested (View fees and book here) and you can hire a set of clubs and cart so you don’t need to bring both your bike and golf clubs! There are practice areas at both courses and lessons are available should you want to access some local knowledge.
